Team Leader of Outside Counsel Relationships

Job Description and Requirements

As a successful candidate you should have a bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or engineering. An advanced degree in law, accounting, and/or office management is preferred. 

  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience with a large corporation, law firm, or professional services company.
  • Demonstrated understanding of traditional and alternative fee arrangements.
  • Advanced knowledge of legal billing software.
  • Working knowledge of relevant systems and tools available for matter, document, and vendor management, including e-billing systems.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
  • Strong leadership, management, and motivational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to influence and leverage relationships within and outside the Law Organization.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to make informed recommendations.
  • Ability to present complex information in an accurate and persuasive manner to all levels of management.
  • High level of professionalism, team player, and a strong client service orientation.
  • Ability to easily handle shifting priorities and multitasking in a deadline-oriented environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:
You will be required to perform the following:

  • Serve as the Law Organization’s liaison with outside counsel.
  • Oversight of the Matter Management and e-billing system.
  • Oversight of strategic projects and initiatives and relevant policies and procedures.
  • Track and analyze relevant billing data, statistics, and trends.
  • Provide billing reports and analysis to Law Management to assist with decision-making.
  • Negotiate with outside counsel to ensure competitive and fair billing.
  • Resolve billing disputes and discrepancies.
  • Optimize outside counsel spend.
  • Develop and implementing cost-control initiatives.
  • Evaluate rate increase requests, implementing alternative fee arrangements and performance scorecards, and coordinating annual outside counsel meetings and other programs.
  • Evaluate requests for proposals with outside counsel.
  • Conduct risk assessment and develop commensurate contingency plans.
  • Identify resource requirements, processes, costs, and timelines.
  • Identify trends influencing the Law Organization’s legal spend and matter workload.
  • Establish and document relevant best practices.
  • Coordinate with the Law Organization’s attorneys as to outside counsel matters.
  • Assist in budget monitoring and forecasting.
  • Be prepared to undertake a limited amount of travel.
